Marine Unit

The Tarpon Springs Police Department Marine Unit is a newly established specialty team dedicated to patrolling and protecting the waterways in and around the City of Tarpon Springs, the sponge capital of the world. The unit is staffed by one full-time officer and supported by approximately eight additional members who serve in a part-time, secondary assignment capacity, providing flexible and responsive maritime coverage.

For several years, the department has maintained smaller vessels, including two aluminum john boats and a rubber Zodiac boat, to support limited operations. The recent addition of a new 2025 Dorado 25’ LE flat deck vessel has significantly expanded the unit’s capabilities. This state-of-the-art vessel is equipped with advanced safety and operational features, including radar, emergency lighting and siren systems, as well as essential rescue and first aid equipment.

With these enhanced resources, the Marine Unit is now equipped to provide a higher level of service on the water—ranging from proactive patrol and enforcement to ensure safe boating practices, to rapid response and advanced rescue operations for boaters in distress. The unit plays a critical role in safeguarding both residents and visitors who utilize the city’s waterways. Response areas include gulf waters around Anclote Key Preserve State Park and Three Rooker Island, as well as the various canals and bayous along the Anclote River that make our city unique.

Importantly, the acquisition of this vessel was made possible through a competitive bid process funded by the use of impact fees rather than traditional tax revenue. Impact fees are one-time charges assessed on new development projects to help fund the infrastructure and public safety resources needed to support community growth. This approach allowed the department to enhance its marine capabilities without placing additional burden on existing taxpayers, reflecting a responsible and forward-thinking investment in public safety.
