Field Training Unit

The Tarpon Springs Police Department Field Training Unit is responsible for the instruction, development, and evaluation of all newly hired police officers. Comprised of highly skilled and experienced personnel, this unit represents some of the agency’s most proficient and knowledgeable officers, selected for their expertise, leadership, and ability to mentor the next generation of law enforcement professionals.

All members of the Field Training Unit receive advanced certification as Field Training Officers (FTOs) and participate in ongoing internal training to ensure consistency, accountability, and excellence in instruction. The unit operates within a structured hierarchy that mirrors the agency, including an administrator, coordinator, supervisors, and Field Training Officers, ensuring oversight and continuity throughout the training process.

The Field Training Program begins with a three-week in-house orientation that focuses on high-liability and foundational topics such as firearms, defensive tactics, and less-lethal platforms. This is followed by a two-week transition phase, during which new officers accompany an FTO to become familiar with the city’s geography, operations, and community. Recruits then enter a structured evaluation phase consisting of three separate phases, each a minimum of five weeks in length. During this time, trainees progress from basic patrol functions to more complex responsibilities, including investigations and scene management.

Throughout the program, Field Training Officers provide hands-on instruction while closely monitoring performance in real-world situations. Trainee progress is thoroughly documented through detailed daily observation reports, ensuring accountability and identifying areas for growth. This rigorous and comprehensive training model is designed to prepare new officers for the responsibilities of solo patrol.

Beyond skills development, the Field Training Unit is instrumental in instilling the agency’s core values—professionalism, integrity, accountability, quality, and creativity—into every new officer. Guided by the department’s mission, “to reduce crime and enhance quality of life through a cooperative partnership with the community,” the unit fosters a culture of service, leadership, and continuous improvement. Through their dedication and mentorship, members of the Field Training Unit play a vital role in shaping the future of the Tarpon Springs Police Department.
