Drone & Robotics Unit

The Tarpon Springs Police Department Drone and Robotics Unit is a specialized team that leverages advanced technology to enhance operational effectiveness, officer safety, and public security. Comprised of trained personnel serving in a secondary assignment capacity, the unit integrates drones, robotic platforms, and mobile video surveillance equipment into a wide range of law enforcement missions.

Drones—also known as small Unmanned Aerial Systems (sUAS)—are routinely deployed during both patrol operations and special events. Officers utilize this technology to assist in locating missing persons, searching large or remote areas, and supporting the apprehension of wanted individuals, significantly increasing efficiency and situational awareness. In addition, drones are deployed during natural disasters, including hurricanes and regional flooding, to assist with search and rescue operations, support recovery efforts, and conduct rapid damage assessments to aid in emergency response and resource allocation. Robotic equipment is primarily utilized during critical incidents alongside the agency’s SWAT team, providing a safer approach to high-risk operations. Additional video surveillance assets are deployed as needed to support investigations and public safety initiatives.

All personnel assigned to operate agency drones are certified under Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) Part 107 regulations and adhere strictly to all applicable guidelines and standards. Beyond routine patrol support, the unit plays an important role in ensuring safety and security at large-scale events, including community gatherings and religious functions.

Members of the Drone and Robotics Unit maintain strong partnerships with regional partners, including the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office Aviation Unit and the Tampa Bay Regional Counter UAS Task Force, further strengthening coordinated response capabilities across jurisdictions.
