The Tarpon Springs Police Department Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is a specialized team of sworn officers trained in advanced crash investigation and reconstruction. Members have received extensive instruction in traffic homicide investigations, with additional expertise in pedestrian, motorcycle, and commercial vehicle collisions. The unit is comprised of approximately twelve dedicated members as a secondary assignment.

Investigators respond to traffic crashes involving fatalities or serious bodily injury, where they utilize advanced technology and proven investigative techniques to thoroughly document and analyze each scene. Equipment and resources include unmanned aerial systems (drones), 3D site scanners, laser total stations, crash data retrieval systems, and precision measurement tools, along with advanced computer-aided diagramming and reconstruction software. These capabilities allow investigators to accurately reconstruct crash events and determine contributing factors.

The work of the Traffic Homicide Investigation Unit is critical in ensuring accountability and supporting the judicial process. Findings from these investigations are used to assist in the prosecution of serious offenses, including Driving Under the Influence (DUI) Manslaughter, Vehicular Homicide, Vehicular Manslaughter, and Leaving the Scene of a Crash Involving Death or Serious Bodily Injury. Through their expertise and attention to detail, unit members play a vital role in delivering justice and promoting roadway safety within the community.
