Bike Unit
The Tarpon Springs Police Department Bicycle Unit is a highly visible and versatile specialty team composed of approximately 12 officers who have received advanced certifications through the International Police Mountain Bike Association (IPMBA) and participate in ongoing training to maintain proficiency. As a secondary assignment, unit members integrate bicycle patrol into their regular duties, enhancing mobility, accessibility, and community engagement throughout the city.

The unit operates a fleet of Volcanic pedal bicycles and Velotric electric bikes, allowing officers to effectively patrol a wide range of environments, including downtown areas, parks, trails, and large public gatherings. Bicycle officers are routinely deployed during normal patrol shifts and play a key role in supporting community events such as First Fridays, local festivals, and organized bike and pedestrian activities. The unit also assists neighboring agencies during major regional events, including Gasparilla in Tampa and the Pinellas Park Christmas Parade.

The recent addition of electric bicycles represents a significant enhancement to the unit’s capabilities. This expansion was made possible through a collaborative fundraising effort involving community residents, local businesses, and charitable organizations. In addition to acquiring five electric bikes, the initiative funded essential equipment upgrades, new helmets for all members, and ongoing maintenance support—demonstrating the strong partnership between the department and the community it serves.
